Chapter 9: The Sage of the Desert
The Sage of the Desert is the ninth chapter of Crimson Desert's main story, marking a dramatic shift in tone and setting. After the darkness of the Blood Coronation, Kliff travels to the Crimson Desert - a vast, mystical region in the east - seeking a sage who can help him master his Abyss powers and find answers about his family's fate.
Story Context & Lore
The Crimson Desert is a land of ancient mysteries, far removed from the political conflicts of Hernand and Demeniss. Named for its red sand dunes that glow like fire at sunset, the desert is home to nomadic tribes, forgotten temples, and secrets dating back to the Age of Wonders.
The Sage, known as Master Jiahn, is a legendary figure - an Abyss scholar who achieved enlightenment without being corrupted. For centuries, he's lived in isolation, studying the balance between the material world and the Abyss. Few find him; fewer still are deemed worthy of his teachings.
This chapter introduces Eastern philosophy and mysticism to the game's lore. Where Western nations view the Abyss as a source of power to exploit or fear, Eastern traditions see it as a natural force requiring balance and understanding. The Abyss isn't evil - it's a mirror reflecting the user's intentions.
The Trials Kliff must undergo are spiritual tests, forcing him to confront his inner demons, traumas, and the question: Can he use Abyss power without becoming a monster like Gabriel Caliburn?
Urdavah is the desert's largest settlement - a city of scholars, merchants, and mystics where East meets West. It serves as the chapter's hub.
The chapter is divided into four questlines, each representing a stage of enlightenment:
The Calling: Answering the summons
Shattered Ties: Breaking free from the past
Thinning Blade: Sharpening the spirit
Six Statues and the Beast: Achieving balance

Quest 1: An Unknown Voice
Objectives:
Speak With the Witch
Find the Trials
Walkthrough:
The Message:
After the Blood Coronation, Kliff receives a cryptic message:
"Kliff, bearer of the Abyss Mark,
You seek answers. You seek family. You seek mastery over the power within you.
Come to the Crimson Desert. Find the Cloister of Enlightenment. Prove yourself worthy, and I will teach you what you need to know.
- Master Jiahn, the Sage"
1. Speak With the Witch:
Before departing, visit Morgana (the witch from Chapter 5) for guidance.
Morgana's Advice:
"The Sage is real, and his knowledge is vast. But his trials are not for the faint of heart. They'll force you to face everything you've been avoiding - your guilt, your rage, your fear. Are you ready for that?"
Kliff's Response:
You can choose:
Determined: "I'll face whatever I must."
Uncertain: "I don't know, but I have to try."
Pragmatic: "I need his knowledge. I'll endure."
Gift:
Morgana provides a Witch's Compass - a magical item that points toward sources of Abyss energy, helping you navigate the desert.
Journey:
Travel east. Cutscene shows:
Leaving familiar lands
Crossing mountain passes
Entering the vast Crimson Desert
The landscape shifting from green to red
2. The Crimson Desert:
Arrive in the desert. The environment is stunning:
Endless red sand dunes
Ancient ruins half-buried
Oases with crystal-clear water
Sky that shifts from deep blue to crimson at sunset
Navigation:
Use the Witch's Compass to find the Cloister of Enlightenment. The compass glows brighter as you approach.
Encounters:
Along the way:
Desert nomads (friendly, offer supplies)
Sand wraiths (hostile Abyss entities, level 45)
Ancient guardians (stone constructs protecting ruins)
3. Find the Trials:
The compass leads to a massive temple complex carved into a canyon wall - the Cloister of Enlightenment.
Entrance:
At the gates, a monk greets you:
"You are expected. The Sage sees all who approach. Enter, and face the First Trial."
Quest 2: Cloister of Enlightenment
Objectives:
Purify the Golden Statues
Walkthrough:
The First Trial:
Inside the cloister, you find a vast chamber with six golden statues arranged in a circle. Each statue represents a virtue:
Courage
Compassion
Wisdom
Temperance
Justice
Humility
The Challenge:
The statues are corrupted by Abyss energy (blackened, twisted). You must purify them.
Purification Mechanic:
Approach each statue and meditate (hold interaction button). This triggers a spiritual trial - a vision where you must demonstrate the virtue.
Statue 1: Courage
Vision:
You're back in the Prologue, during the Black Bears' ambush. But this time, you can choose to flee or stand and fight.
Trial:
Stand and fight despite overwhelming odds. The vision doesn't require you to win - just to not run.
Lesson:
"Courage is not the absence of fear, but action despite it."
Purification:
The statue glows golden, cleansed.
Statue 2: Compassion
Vision:
You're in Demeniss, facing a wounded Jackal soldier begging for mercy.
Trial:
Choose to spare him, even though he's your enemy.
Choices:
Spare: Pass the trial
Kill: Fail (must retry)
Lesson:
"Compassion extends even to those who've wronged you."
Purification:
The statue is cleansed.
Statue 3: Wisdom
Vision:
You're presented with three doors:
Red Door: Power (promises strength to defeat all enemies)
Blue Door: Knowledge (promises answers about your family)
White Door: Balance (promises neither, but inner peace)
Trial:
Choose the White Door (the others lead to dead ends).
Lesson:
"True wisdom is knowing that power and knowledge without balance lead to ruin."
Purification:
The statue is cleansed.
Statue 4: Temperance
Vision:
You're offered unlimited Abyss power - enough to become a god like Gabriel attempted.
Trial:
Refuse the power.
Temptation:
The vision tries to convince you:
"You could save everyone"
"You could find your family instantly"
"You could end all wars"
Resist:
Choose restraint over excess.
Lesson:
"Temperance is the strength to refuse what you desire most."
Purification:
The statue is cleansed.
Statue 5: Justice
Vision:
You're judging Ludvig (from Chapter 7). You can execute him or show mercy.
Trial:
Choose mercy (justice tempered with compassion).
Lesson:
"Justice without mercy is cruelty. Mercy without justice is weakness. Balance both."
Purification:
The statue is cleansed.
Statue 6: Humility
Vision:
You're celebrated as a hero, crowds chanting your name. You're offered kingship, worship, glory.
Trial:
Reject it all, acknowledging you're just one person doing what's right.
Lesson:
"Humility is recognizing that no individual is greater than the whole."
Purification:
The final statue is cleansed.
Completion:
With all six statues purified, the chamber transforms. Light floods in, and a door opens at the far end.
The Sage Appears:
Master Jiahn emerges - an elderly man with a long white beard, simple robes, and eyes that seem to contain infinite depth.
Dialogue:
"You have passed the First Trial. You understand the virtues in theory. Now, you must live them. Come, Kliff. Your training begins."
Rewards
None (spiritual growth is the reward)
Questline 2: Shattered Ties
Region: Urdavah, Crimson Desert
Type: Liberation & Spiritual Quest
Story Summary
Master Jiahn sends Kliff to free an enslaved dragon, teaching him that true strength comes from breaking the chains that bind - both literal and metaphorical.
Quest 1: Mark of the Scar
Objectives:
Examine the Stone Tablet
Reveal the Secret of the Stone Tablet
Walkthrough:
The Lesson:
Master Jiahn explains the next trial:
"In the city of Urdavah, a dragon is enslaved - bound by chains of Abyss magic. Free it, and you will understand the nature of bondage and liberation."
Travel to Urdavah:
Journey to the desert city. Urdavah is magnificent:
White stone buildings with domed roofs
Bustling markets selling exotic goods
Scholars debating in public squares
A melting pot of cultures
1. The Stone Tablet:
In the city center, find a stone tablet covered in ancient script.
Examination:
Use your Abyss abilities to read the tablet. It tells the story:
"Centuries ago, a dragon terrorized the desert. The people bound it with Abyss chains, enslaving it to protect the city. But the dragon was not evil - merely misunderstood. Its rage came from pain, not malice. The chains that 'protect' us also perpetuate suffering."
2. Reveal the Secret:
The tablet has a hidden message (use Memory Reading):
Vision:
You see the dragon's capture - it was defending its nest from hunters who killed its mate. In grief and rage, it attacked the city. The people, not understanding, saw only a monster.
Revelation:
The dragon is a victim, not a villain. Freeing it is an act of justice.
Quest 2: Shackles of Fate
Objectives:
Remove the Spear From the Dragon
Hold on Atop the Thrashing Dragon's Back
Walkthrough:
1. Find the Dragon:
The dragon is chained in a canyon outside Urdavah, used as a guardian against raiders.
The Scene:
The dragon is massive - easily 50 feet long, with scales like rubies. A Spear of Binding (an Abyss artifact) is driven through its chest, keeping it docile.
Guards:
The city has posted guards (12 soldiers, level 46) to prevent anyone from freeing it.
Combat or Stealth:
You can:
Fight the guards (straightforward but loud)
Sneak past (wait for patrol gaps)
Convince them (high persuasion check, requires completing a side quest first)
2. Remove the Spear:
Approach the dragon. It's conscious, eyes filled with pain and rage.
Interaction:
Use your Abyss connection to communicate (telepathically):
"You... bear the mark. You understand suffering. Will you... free me?"
Choice:
Free it: Proceed with the trial
Leave it: Fail the trial (must reconsider)
Removal:
Grasp the spear and pull. This triggers a button-mashing sequence - the spear resists, Abyss energy fighting you.
Success:
The spear comes free. The dragon roars, chains shattering.
3. Dragon's Rage:
Freed but still enraged, the dragon thrashes wildly, threatening to destroy everything.
The Test:
You must calm it by riding it, demonstrating trust.
Mounting:
Jump onto the dragon's back as it thrashes.
Holding On:
Minigame:
Match directional prompts to stay mounted
The dragon bucks, rolls, tries to throw you off
Last 60 seconds without falling
Calming:
As you hold on, speak to the dragon telepathically:
"I know your pain. I know your loss. But rage won't bring them back. Let go. Be free."
Breakthrough:
The dragon stops thrashing. It realizes you're not an enemy.
Bond:
The dragon bows its head, allowing you to dismount.
"You... freed me. Not just from chains, but from hatred. I am... grateful."
Gift:
The dragon offers to serve as your mount (unlocks dragon riding).
Name:
You can name the dragon (default: Crimson).
Rewards
Stardust Necklace (accessory, +20% Abyss power, +15% magic damage, "Dragon's Bond" effect: +25% damage while mounted)
Questline 3: Thinning Blade
Region: Crimson Desert, Spire of the Sun (Abyss)
Type: Spiritual Mastery Quest
Story Summary
Master Jiahn teaches Kliff to enter the Abyss consciously and achieve enlightenment - mastering his Abyss powers without corruption.
Quest 1: Crossing Point
Objectives:
Examine the Stone Tablet
Reveal the Secret of the Stone Tablet
Walkthrough:
The Teaching:
Master Jiahn explains:
"You've been touched by the Abyss, but you fear it. You use its power reluctantly, always worried about corruption. To master it, you must enter it willingly, face it directly, and emerge unchanged. This is enlightenment."
1. The Stone Tablet:
At another ancient site, find a tablet describing the Spire of the Sun - a place where the barrier between worlds is thin.
2. Reveal the Secret:
Use Memory Reading on the tablet.
Vision:
You see ancient monks entering the Abyss through meditation, seeking wisdom. Some returned enlightened. Others never returned at all.
Warning:
The Abyss reflects your inner self. If your heart is corrupt, the Abyss will consume you. If your heart is pure, you can navigate it safely.
Quest 2: Unwavering Steps
Objectives:
Go Through the Spire of the Sun to Enter the Abyss
Achieve Enlightenment
Walkthrough:
1. Spire of the Sun:
Travel to the spire - a tower of golden stone that seems to glow with inner light.
Ascent:
Climb the tower:
Spiral stairs
Meditation chambers (rest points)
Murals depicting the path to enlightenment
Summit:
At the top, Master Jiahn is waiting.
Meditation:
Sit with the Sage and meditate. He guides you:
"Close your eyes. Breathe. Feel the Abyss within you. Do not fight it. Do not embrace it. Simply... be."
2. Enter the Abyss:
Your consciousness enters the Abyss while your body remains in meditation.
The Abyss (Conscious Entry):
Unlike previous Abyss visits (chaotic, dangerous), this is controlled. The landscape reflects your mental state:
Calm areas (where you're at peace)
Stormy areas (where you're conflicted)
Dark areas (your fears and traumas)
Navigation:
Walk through your inner landscape, confronting manifestations of your psyche:
Your Guilt:
Manifests as the Greymanes who died in the Prologue
They accuse you: "You survived. We didn't. Why?"
Trial: Forgive yourself, acknowledge you did your best
Your Rage:
Manifests as a shadow version of yourself, consumed by hatred
It attacks you
Trial: Don't fight it - absorb it, integrating your anger without being controlled by it
Your Fear:
Manifests as visions of your family dead, your quest futile
Trial: Accept uncertainty, continue despite not knowing the outcome
Your Desire for Power:
Manifests as Gabriel Caliburn, offering you godhood
Trial: Refuse, choosing purpose over power
3. Achieve Enlightenment:
After confronting all aspects of yourself, you reach the Center - a place of perfect stillness.
The Woman in White:
She appears one final time:
"You've done it, Kliff. You've walked the Abyss and remained yourself. You are enlightened - not in the sense of knowing everything, but in understanding your place in the balance."
Gift:
She grants you Abyss Mastery - the ability to use Abyss powers without corruption.
New Abilities Unlocked:
Abyss Step: Teleport short distances
Void Shield: Create a barrier of Abyss energy
Soul Sight: See the true nature of things (detect lies, hidden paths, etc.)
Return:
Your consciousness returns to your body. Master Jiahn smiles:
"You have achieved what few ever do. You are ready for the final trial."
Rewards
Witch's Ring (accessory, +30% Abyss resistance, +20% magic power)
Greymane's Earring (accessory, +15% damage, "Survivor's Will" effect: +50% damage when below 25% HP)

Region: Morning Mist Peaks, Jijeong Temple

Quest 1: Morning Fog
Objectives:
Examine the Stone Tablet
Reveal the Secret of the Stone Tablet
Walkthrough:
The Final Trial:
Master Jiahn explains:
"There is a temple in the Morning Mist Peaks - Jijeong Temple. It was once a place of great spiritual power, but it has fallen into chaos. Restore it, and you will have proven your mastery."
1. Travel to Morning Mist Peaks:
Journey north to a mountain range shrouded in perpetual mist.
The Landscape:
Towering peaks
Dense fog limiting visibility
Ancient paths carved into cliffs
Monasteries clinging to mountainsides
2. Stone Tablet:
At the base of the path to Jijeong Temple, find a warning tablet.
3. Reveal the Secret:
Use Memory Reading.
Vision:
You see the temple's fall:
A Beast of Chaos (an Abyss entity) attacked
The monks fought valiantly but were overwhelmed
In desperation, they sealed the beast using six Pensive Statues
The seal weakened over time, and now the beast is breaking free
Mission:
Restore the statues to reinforce the seal, then face the beast.
Quest 2: Jijeong Temple in Chaos
Objectives:
Repair the First Pensive Statue
Repair the Second Pensive Statue
Repair the Third Pensive Statue
Walkthrough:
Arrival:
Jijeong Temple is in ruins:
Buildings collapsed
Statues toppled
Abyss corruption spreading like a disease
Surviving monks huddled in the main hall
The Monks:
The head monk, Brother Tenzin, explains:
"The seal is failing. The Beast of Chaos will break free within hours. If it does, it will consume the entire mountain range. Please, help us restore the Pensive Statues."
The Pensive Statues:
Six statues representing the same virtues from the First Trial. Three have been destroyed and must be repaired.
1. First Pensive Statue (Courage):
Location: Eastern courtyard
Damage: Shattered into pieces
Repair Puzzle:
Collect the pieces (scattered around the courtyard) and reassemble them:
Base: Near the fountain
Body: In the garden
Head: On a rooftop
Arms: In the meditation hall
Assembly:
Place pieces in correct order (trial and error or use Soul Sight to see the "ghost" of the complete statue).
Enemies:
Abyss wraiths (level 48) guard the pieces - defeat them to collect.
Completion:
Once assembled, the statue glows, reinforcing the seal.
2. Second Pensive Statue (Wisdom):
Location: Western library
Damage: Corrupted by Abyss energy
Purification:
Use your Abyss Mastery to draw the corruption out:
Stand before the statue
Channel your power (hold button)
Absorb the corruption into yourself (you can handle it now)
Challenge:
As you absorb corruption, your vision darkens and whispers tempt you. Resist (button prompts) to complete the purification.
Completion:
The statue is cleansed, glowing with golden light.
3. Third Pensive Statue (Compassion):
Location: Northern shrine
Damage: Possessed by a vengeful spirit
Exorcism:
The spirit is a monk who died defending the temple, now twisted by rage.
Dialogue:
"They abandoned us! The world forgot this temple! We died for nothing!"
Trial:
Show compassion:
Listen to his story
Acknowledge his pain
Offer peace: "Your sacrifice mattered. The temple still stands because of you. Rest now."
Resolution:
The spirit calms, releasing the statue and passing on.
Completion:
The statue is freed, glowing brightly.
Seal Reinforced:
With three statues repaired (the other three are intact), the seal strengthens. But it's not enough - the Beast must be confronted directly.
Quest 3: Path to Enlightenment
Objectives:
Tell the Monk the Pensive Statues Have Been Restored
Walkthrough:
Report to Brother Tenzin:
"You've done it. The seal is stable. But the Beast is still within the temple, trapped but conscious. To truly end this, you must face it."
The Beast's Chamber:
Descend into the temple's depths - a vast underground cavern where the Beast is sealed.
Boss Fight: Beast of Chaos
Level: 50
Type: Abyss Entity (Massive)
Appearance: A chimera-like creature - lion's body, dragon's wings, serpent's tail, multiple heads
Phase 1 (100%-70% HP):
Attacks:
Multi-Head Bite: Each head attacks independently
Tail Sweep: Wide arc attack
Wing Buffet: Creates wind that pushes you back
Chaos Breath: Abyss energy beam from mouths
Strategy:
Focus on one head at a time
Dodge Tail Sweep (telegraphed)
Use Abyss Step to avoid Wing Buffet
Interrupt Chaos Breath with ranged attacks
Phase 2 (70%-40% HP):
Transformation:
The Beast absorbs more Abyss energy, growing larger.
New Attacks:
Reality Distortion: The arena warps (gravity shifts, walls move)
Summon Minions: Creates smaller chaos beasts
Chaos Storm: AoE attack covering the entire arena
Strategy:
Adapt to Reality Distortion quickly
Kill minions fast (they heal the Beast if left alive)
For Chaos Storm, use Void Shield (new ability) to block damage
Phase 3 (40%-0% HP):
Enlightenment Test:
The Beast speaks (telepathically):
"You cannot defeat me with violence alone. I am chaos - I am the imbalance in all things. To truly defeat me, you must understand me."
The Truth:
The Beast isn't evil - it's a manifestation of the world's imbalance. Fighting it only perpetuates the cycle.
Resolution:
Instead of attacking, use your enlightenment:
Meditate in the center of the arena (special prompt)
Channel your Abyss Mastery
Absorb the Beast's chaos, integrating it into yourself
Transformation:
The Beast dissolves into pure energy, flowing into you. You've achieved perfect balance - chaos and order, Abyss and reality, coexisting within you.
Master Jiahn Appears:
The Sage has been watching:
"You have passed the final trial. You did not destroy the chaos - you embraced it, balanced it. This is true enlightenment. You are ready to face what comes next."
Gift:
The Sage gives you a Scroll of Prophecy:
"The final battle approaches. The Abyss will tear reality apart. Only one who has achieved balance can stop it. Return to your companions. The war is not over."
Chapter End:
Kliff returns to the west, transformed. He's no longer just a mercenary or a warrior - he's a master of the Abyss, ready for the endgame.
